Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 750 m, occasionally 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 5,000,000 - 50,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies rufiventris and griseodorsalis were, until 1931, considered to represent separate species and may warrant restoration as such. Taxonomy of this species in need of review and revision. Distributional limits of northern subspecies and of albiventris uncertain. Subspecies assignments are tentative.

The following 15 subspecies are recognised:

  • rufiventris (Bonaparte, 1838)   -  Lowlands of southern Mexico (south-central Veracruz, northern Oaxaca, northern and southern Chiapas), northern and southern Guatemala, western Belize, northern Honduras and El Salvador south to central Panama, and intermittently to south-western Ecuador.
  • ardeleo van Tyne & Trautman, 1941   -  South-eastern Mexico (Yucatán Peninsula south to south-western Campeche and Quintana Roo).
  • panamensis Phillips, AR, 1991   -  Central and eastern Panama (including Azuero Peninsula); possibly extending north to Costa Rica.
  • sanctaemarthae Sclater, PL, 1862   -  Caribbean coast of northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
  • pallidus Todd, 1913   -  Northern Colombia (Zulia Valley) and northern Venezuela (Falcón east to Miranda).
  • trinitatis Lesson, R, 1839   -  Western and north-eastern Venezuela (western Apure east to Sucre), eastern Colombia (western Meta, western Putumayo) and north-western Brazil (R Amajaú); Trinidad.
  • griseodorsalis Chapman, 1912   -  Western Colombia (western Caldas south to south-central Valle).
  • albiventris Sclater, PL, 1883   -  Eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolí­var) east to Suriname and French Guiana, south to north-central Brazil (central Pará).
  • duidae Zimmer, JT, 1937   -  Southern Venezuela, eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador.
  • badius Zimmer, JT, 1937   -  South-eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru (central Amazonas).
  • amazonum Hellmayr, 1907   -  Eastern Peru (eastern bank of upper R Ucayali) to north-central Brazil (western Pará).
  • obscurus J. T. Zimmer, 1931   -  Eastern Peru from western bank of upper R Ucayali (Santa Rosa) south to eastern Juní­n.
  • austerus Zimmer, JT, 1937   -  Northern coastal Brazil (eastern Pará, northern Maranhío).
  • sticturus Hellmayr, 1902   -  West-central Brazil (north-western Mato Grosso).
  • melanurus Vieillot, 1819   -  Coastal eastern Brazil from Paraí­ba south to Santa Caterina.
