Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, high altitude shrubland. From 400 - 2,900 m.

Range (Guide)
Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Grey-headed subspecies griseiceps and phaeopleurus sometimes considered to represent a separate species. Subspecies sierrae sometimes merged into nominate. Described subspecies aenopennis (from northern Sinaloa and south-western Chihuahua, in Mexico), bangsi (El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala) and russatus (mountains of south-western Costa Rica and western Panama) synonymized with, respectively, clarus, melpomene and griseiceps.

The following 14 subspecies are recognised:

  • clarus Jouy, 1894   -  North-western and north-central Mexico.
  • melpomene (Cabanis, 1850)   -  Central and southern Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.
  • costaricensis Hellmayr, 1902   -  Costa Rica.
  • griseiceps Salvin, 1866   -  South-western Costa Rica and western and central Panama.
  • phaeopleurus Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876   -  Western Colombia.
  • sierrae Hellmayr, 1919   -  Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in northern Colombia.
  • aurantiirostris (Hartlaub, 1850)   -  North-eastern Colombia and western Venezuela.
  • barbaritoi Aveledo & Ginés, 1952   -  Perijá Mts, in north-western Venezuela.
  • birchalli Seebohm, 1881   -  North-eastern Venezuela and Trinidad.
  • inornatus Zimmer, JT, 1944   -  Western slope of eastern Andes of Colombia (Santander).
  • insignis Zimmer, JT, 1944   -  Eastern slope of Andes of Colombia.
  • aenopennis Moore, RT, 1937   -  Highlands of north-western Mexico (northern Sinaloa to south-western Chihuahua).
  • bangsi Dickey & van Rossem, 1925   -  Guatemala to El Salvador and Honduras.
  • russatus Griscom, 1924   -  Mountains of south-western Costa Rica and western Panama.
