Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rufous-throated Dipper (Cinclus schulzii) and sometimes considered conspecific.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

leucocephalus Tschudi, 1844 - Andes of Peru and north-western Bolivia (south to western Santa Cruz).
rivularis Bangs, 1899 - Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
leuconotus Sclater, PL, 1858 - Sierra de Perij�, and Andes from western Venezuela (south from Lara) south to Ecuador.
