Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru.

Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
Southern subspecies darienensis and minor were formerly regarded as constituting a separate species, but hybridization with nominate occurs in overlap zone in central Panama.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • brevipennis (Giraud, 1852)   -  Eastern Mexico (south-eastern San Luis Potosí, northern and central Veracruz, northern Oaxaca, southern Chiapas).
  • dickermani Parkes, 1991   -  South-eastern Mexico (southern Veracruz east to Tabasco, northern Chiapas and western Campeche).
  • phillipsi Parkes, 1991   -  South-eastern Mexico (eastern Campeche and Quintana Roo) and northern Belize.
  • decurtatus (Bonaparte, 1838)   -  Southern Belize and Guatemala south to central Panama.
  • darienensis (Griscom, 1927)   -  Central Panama east to north-western Colombia (east to Santander).
  • minor von Berlepsch & Taczanowski, 1884   -  Pacific lowlands from western Colombia south to extreme north-western Peru (Tumbes).
