Subspecies
Sometimes suggested that dark-eyed "rubrifrons group" (including also luteifrons and lutescens) of Amazonia may represent a separate species, but no apparent distinctions in vocalizations between this group and birds in rest of species' range. Subspecies nelsoni rather poorly differentiated, possibly only an intergrade between adjacent subspecies (pallidipectus and bulunensis).

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

  • ochraceiceps Sclater, 1859   -  Southern Mexico (from southern Veracruz and northern Oaxaca) east, including most of Yucatán Peninsula, to northern Guatemala and Belize.
  • pallidipectus (Ridgway, 1903)   -  Southern Guatemala and Honduras southern on Caribbean slope to north-western Panama (Bocas del Toro).
  • pacificus Parkes, 1991   -  Pacific slope of Costa Rica (southern from Carara) and western Panama (east to western Chiriquí).
  • nelsoni (Todd, 1929)   -  Panama from Chiriquí east to western Darién.
  • bulunensis Hartert, 1902   -  Eastern Panama (Darién) and adjacent western Colombia south to north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas).
  • ferrugineifrons Sclater, PL, 1862   -  South-eastern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar except east) and adjacent western Guyana, south-eastern and eastern Colombia (southern from Meta) and eastern Ecuador (east of Andes), north-eastern Peru and north-western Brazil (Roraima west of R Negro, south to R Juruá and R Purús).
  • viridior (Todd, 1929)   -  Southern Peru and northern Bolivia (east to Santa Cruz).
  • luteifrons Sclater, PL, 1881   -  South-eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolívar), the Guianas, and northern Brazil (eastern from R Branco, south to R Amazon). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Olive-crowned Greenlet (Tunchiornis luteifrons).
  • lutescens (Snethlage, E, 1914)   -  North-central Brazil south of R Amazon (R Madeira east to R Xingu).
  • rubrifrons Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1867   -  North-eastern Brazil south of R Amazon (R Tocantins and north-eastern Pará).
