Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus), Noronha Vireo (Vireo gracilirostris), Black-whiskered Vireo (Vireo altiloquus) and Yucatan Vireo (Vireo magister). Frequently treated as conspecific with Red-eyed Vireo (Vireo olivaceus), but differs morphologically and vocally, and biochemical studies indicate that the two diverged from each other c. 4-6 million years ago.

Proposed subspecies insulanus, described from I del Rey, in Pearl Is (Gulf of Panama), is synonymized with nominate.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • flavoviridis (Cassin, 1851)   -  Breeds Rio Grande delta (southern USA-north-eastern Mexico border) and southern in Mexico (from north-central Sonora in western and from northern Tamaulipas in east) through Central America to central Panama (including Coiba I and Pearl Is), possibly also to eastern Panama (Darién) and adjacent Colombia; migrates to north-western South America (Colombia south to Bolivia).
  • forreri Madarász, 1885   -  Breeds Tres Marias Is, off Nayarit, in western Mexico; migrates to Amazonia.
  • perplexus (Phillips, AR, 1991)   -  Breeds northern Guatemala (Petén), possibly also adjacent south-eastern Mexico; migrates to eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru.
  • hypoleucus van Rossem & Hachisuka, 1937   -  North-western Mexico (south-eastern Sonora to southern Sinaloa).
  • vanrossemi (Phillips, AR, 1991)   -  South-eastern El Salvador.
  • insulanus Bangs, 1902   -  Pearl Islands (Gulf of Panama). Winters to upper Amazonia.
