Subspecies
This genus and Hylophilus sometimes placed together in a subfamily Vireoninae. Closely related to eight other scrub-dwelling vireos, namely White-eyed Vireo (Vireo griseus), Mangrove Vireo (Vireo pallens), Cozumel Vireo (Vireo bairdi), St. Andrew Vireo (Vireo caribaeus), Jamaican Vireo (Vireo modestus), Cuban Vireo (Vireo gundlachii), Puerto Rican Vireo (Vireo latimeri) and Flat-billed Vireo (Vireo nanus). Probably closest to White-eyed Vireo (Vireo griseus), which has been treated as conspecific. Subspecies approximans of Mangrove Vireo (Vireo pallens) has sometimes been placed with this species, but is morphologically and vocally distinctive, and may represent a separate species.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • crassirostris (Bryant, 1859)   -  Bahama Is.
  • stalagmium Buden, 1985   -  Caicos Is.
  • tortugae Richmond, 1917   -  Tortuga I, off north-western Hispaniola.
