Subspecies
Apparently closely allied to Ash-throated Gnateater (Conopophaga peruviana) and Slaty Gnateater (Conopophaga ardesiaca) and part of the Rufous Gnateater (Conopophaga lineata) lineage, which is also thought to include Hooded Gnateater (Conopophaga roberti) and, perhaps, Black-bellied Gnateater (Conopophaga melanogaster). Meets subspecies saturata of Slaty Gnateater (Conopophaga ardesiaca) in south-eastern Cuzco, which probably marks southern limit of range. Birds from western slope of central Andes of Colombia may possibly belong to an unnamed taxon, but no details available.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

chocoensis Chapman, 1915 - Western Colombia on western slope of western Andes and in western Choc� (Baud� Mts).
castaneiceps Sclater, 1857 - Central and eastern Andes of Colombia south to central Ecuador.
chapmani Carriker, 1933 - Eastern slope of eastern Andes from southern Ecuador south to northern Peru (San Mart��n).
brunneinucha von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896 - Eastern slope in central Peru (from Hu�nuco south to Cuzco).
