Populations from Belize may show signs of intergradation between cervinigularis and hypophaeus. Proposed subspecies amusos described (from Honduras) as paler than latter, but considered not diagnosable. Some signs of introgression between auricularis and nominate in western Brazil.

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

• cervinigularis (Sclater, PL, 1857)   -  Caribbean lowlands of southern Mexico (Veracruz and southern from southern Quintana Roo), Guatemala and western Belize.
• hypophaeus Ridgway, 1909   -  Honduras south to north-western Panama.
• exsertus Bangs, 1901   -  Pacific slope of south-western Costa Rica and western Panama.
• pallidigularis Lawrence, 1862   -  Eastern Panama, northern and western Colombia (east to Magdalena Valley in north) and north-western Ecuador (south to western Guayas and Los Rí­os).
• turdinus (Pelzeln, 1859)   -  South-eastern Colombia (southern from western Meta and Vaupés), southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolí­var) and the Guianas south to eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru and northern Brazil (north of R Amazon).
• ochrolaemus (Tschudi, 1844)   -  South of R Amazon, from eastern Peru and western Brazil (east to left bank of R Purús) south to central Bolivia (western Pando south to north-western Santa Cruz).
• auricularis Zimmer, JT, 1935   -  Central Brazil (from right bank of R Purús east to eastern Pará) south to north-eastern Bolivia (eastern Pando, north-eastern Santa Cruz).
• amusos Peters, 1929   -  Tropical south-eastern Guatemala to Honduras.
