Subspecies
Has no obvious sister-species. Subspecies intergrade extensively. Populations from south-eastern Colombia included within subspecies flavipectus but may be intergrades between that subspecies and subflavescens. Populations from the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil are apparently intergrades between flavipectus and nominate, and those from south-eastern Peru between subflavescens and nominate. Quantitative analysis, with more thorough sampling, is likely to reveal that all variation is clinal and not worthy of nomenclatural recognition. Species name often spelt "ruficaudatus", but must agree with neuter gender of genus.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • flavipectus Phelps and Gilliard, 1941   -  South-eastern Colombia (southern from western Meta and Vaupés), south-eastern Venezuela (southern from central Amazonas and north-western Bolívar), the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil.
  • subflavescens (Cabanis, 1873)   -  Eastern Ecuador (very local, near Andes) and eastern Peru.
  • ruficaudata (d'Orbigny and Lafresnaye, 1838)   -  The Guianas, north-eastern and Amazonian Brazil (Amazonas east to northern Maranhío), south-eastern Peru (eastern Ucayali) and northern Bolivia (south to Cochabamba and north-eastern Beni).
