Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged into Philydor. Plumage, foraging behaviour and voice have suggested to some authors that it may be more closely related to Thripadectes than currently indicated in linear sequences. Forms a superspecies with Guttulate Foliage-gleaner (Syndactyla guttulata).

Proposed subspecies colligata from north-western Peru said to have crown and back less fuscous brown (contrasting more with blackish collar) and chin darker yellow than mentalis, but description based on only 3 specimens, and characters mentioned are highly individually variable. Proposed subspecies ruficrissa from central Peru supposedly with back blacker, rump and uppertail-coverts more rufescent and throat patch more restricted, but these characters also highly variable and do not permit diagnosis of individual specimens (although lack of distinctive features rather surprising, given major biogeographical barrier separating this population from those of northern Andes).

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • lineata (Lawrence, 1865)   -  Mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama (east to Veraguas).
  • tacarcunae (Chapman, 1923)   -  Cerros Mali, Pirre and Tacarcuna, in extreme eastern Panama and north-western Colombia.
  • subalaris (Sclater, 1859)   -  Andes of western Colombia (western range, western slope of central range) and western Ecuador (south to El Oro).
  • striolata (Todd, 1913)   -  Eastern Andes in north-western Venezuela (Lara, Barinas) and Colombia (Magdalena south to Meta and Huila, and Serranía San Lucas).
  • olivacea Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1956   -  South-western Táchira (Chiquito Valley), in western Venezuela.
  • mentalis (Taczanowski & von Berlepsch, 1885)   -  Eastern slope of Andes in Ecuador and Peru (south to Cuzco).
  • colligata Zimmer, 1935   -  Subtropical north-western Peru (Cajamarca).
  • ruficrissa (Carriker, 1930)   -  Subtropical central Peru (Junín).
