Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Tepui Spinetail (Cranioleuca demissa), Streak-capped Spinetail (Cranioleuca hellmayri), Ash-browed Spinetail (Cranioleuca curtata), Line-cheeked Spinetail (Cranioleuca antisiensis) and Baron's Spinetail (Cranioleuca baroni) and all share plumage similarities and mostly lower montane distribution, and their close relationship is consistent with recent genetic data. Racial identity of birds in eastern Panama uncertain. Tentatively placed with griseigularis. Specimens from southern Colombia may be intermediate between griseigularis and nominate subspecies.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

rufigenis (Lawrence, 1868) - Mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama.
griseigularis (Ridgway, 1909) - Extreme eastern Panama (Cerro Pirre, Cerro Tacarcuna, Cerro Mali) and western and central Andes of Colombia (on western slope from Antioquia south to Quind��o).
erythrops (Sclater, 1860) - Andes of western Ecuador (south to north-western Azuay, also in coastal Cordillera de Mache in south-western Manab�� and western Guayas).
