East of Andes from southern Colombia (Putumayo), Ecuador, Peru and south-western Amazonian Brazil (east to lower R Juruá and upper R Madeira) south to north-western Bolivia (Pando, La Paz).

Subspecies
Considered to form a species group with Blackish Antbird (Cercomacroides nigrescens), Willis's Antbird (Cercomacroides laeta), Dusky Antbird (Cercomacroides tyrannina) and Parker's Antbird (Cercomacroides parkeri) on basis of plumage and vocal characters, and pending completion of major genetic study. Birds from central Peru and western Brazil south to Bolivia described as subspecies hypomelaena, but appear to represent southern end of a cline of decreasing plumage darkness.
