Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 1,100 m.

Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Relationships with others of genus unclear. Subspecies meridionalis poorly known. Sight records from Colombia, north-eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru tentatively assigned to this species (subspecies signata), but further study is needed. Birds from French Guiana and adjacent north-eastern Brazil described as subspecies elaopteryx, but considered indistinguishable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • signata (Zimmer, JT, 1932)   -  South-eastern Colombia (Caquetá, Guainí­a), extreme north-eastern Ecuador (Sucumbios north of R Aguarico), north-eastern Peru (Loreto north of R Napo) and north-western Amazonian Brazil (upper R Negro region).
  • spodioptila (Sclater & Salvin, 1881)   -  Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolí­var), the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (Roraima, lower R Negro region, northern Pará, western Amapá).
  • meridionalis (Snethlage, E, 1925)   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil between lower R Madeira and lower R Tapajós.
