Subspecies
Relationships with others of genus unclear. Subspecies meridionalis poorly known. Sight records from Colombia, north-eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru tentatively assigned to this species (subspecies signata), but further study is needed. Birds from French Guiana and adjacent north-eastern Brazil described as subspecies elaopteryx, but considered indistinguishable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

signata (Zimmer, JT, 1932) - South-eastern Colombia (Caquet�, Guain��a), extreme north-eastern Ecuador (Sucumbios north of R Aguarico), north-eastern Peru (Loreto north of R Napo) and north-western Amazonian Brazil (upper R Negro region).
spodioptila (Sclater & Salvin, 1881) - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bol��var), the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (Roraima, lower R Negro region, northern Par�, western Amap�).
meridionalis (Snethlage, E, 1925) - South-central Amazonian Brazil between lower R Madeira and lower R Tapaj�s.
