Members of genus form a well-defined clade, and appear to be closely related to Hypocnemis. Most closely related to Long-tailed Antbird (Drymophila caudata). Recent genetic study indicated substantial differentiation between populations eastern and west of R Madeira, and possibility that more than one species involved.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• devillei (Ménégaux & Hellmayr, 1906)   -  South-central Colombia (western Meta, western Putumayo), north-eastern Ecuador (western Napo), south-eastern Peru (Ucayali, eastern Cuzco, Madre de Dios), south-western Amazonian Brazil (west of R Madeira in western Amazonas and Acre) and north-western and central Bolivia (Pando, La Paz, Cochabamba).
• subochracea Chapman, 1921   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil (east of R Madeira and R Mamoré in eastern Amazonas, Rondônia, western and northern Mato Grosso and western Pará) and north-eastern Bolivia (north-eastern Santa Cruz). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Striated Antbird (Drymophila subochracea).
