Subspecies
Genetic, morphological and behavioural analyses indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that also includes Brown-bellied Antwren (Epinecrophylla gutturalis), White-eyed Antwren (Epinecrophylla leucophthalma), Foothill Antwren (Epinecrophylla spodionota), Stipple-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla haematonota), Yasuni Antwren (Epinecrophylla fjeldsaai), Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata) and Rufous-tailed Antwren (Epinecrophylla erythrura) (the "stipple-throated antwren assemblage"), and which may not be closely related to other species placed in the genus. Although four subspecies have been described, namely, costaricensis (southern Honduras to western Panama), fulviventris (eastern Panama to western Colombia), salmoni (central Colombia) and viduata (north-western Ecuador), conflicting information surrounds the diagnosability and geographical ranges of these. Further study is required.

No subspecies.
