Subspecies
Genus closely related to Antilophia. All members of present genus suggested by some as forming a superspecies. Has sometimes been treated as conspecific with Long-tailed Manakin (Chiroxiphia linearis) and Lance-tailed Manakin (Chiroxiphia lanceolata). Formerly included Yungas Manakin (Chiroxiphia boliviana) as a subspecies, but the two recently shown to differ in ecology and voice.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
napensis Miller, W, 1908 - Southern and south-eastern Colombia (east of Andes), eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (mainly north of R Marañón).
regina Sclater, PL, 1856 - Eastern Peru (south of R Marañón), western Brazil mostly south of Amazon (east to lower R Tapajós, also recorded north of Amazon at two sites west of R Negro) and extreme northern Bolivia.
atlantica Dalmas, 1900 - Tobago.
pareola (Linnaeus, 1766) - Eastern Venezuela (north-eastern Bolívar), the Guianas, and north-eastern and eastern Brazil (from Roraima, Obidos and right bank of R Tapajós east to Maranhío and south to Mato Grosso and south-eastern Pará, also isolated coastal population from Rio Grande do Norte south to Espírito Santo).
