Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Golden-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra erythrocephala) and Red-headed Manakin (Ceratopipra rubrocapilla).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- mentalis Sclater, 1857 - From south-eastern Mexico (southern Veracruz) south, on Caribbean slope, to eastern Costa Rica.
- ignifera (Bangs, 1901) - Panama, mainly on Caribbean side.
- minor (Hartert, 1898) - Western Colombia and western Ecuador.
