Subspecies
Was for long placed in monotypic genus Teleonema on basis of highly modified tail feathers. Closely related to, and forming a superspecies with, Crimson-hooded Manakin (Pipra aureola) and Band-tailed Manakin (Pipra fasciicauda), all three replacing each other geographically. "Pipra heterocerca" is hybrid with Crimson-hooded Manakin (Pipra aureola). Subspecies subpallida apparently intergrades with nominate around Colombia-Ecuador border.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
subpallida (Todd, 1928) - Eastern Colombia (east of Andes) and north-western Venezuela (eastern, on both sides of Andes, to Miranda).
filicauda Spix, 1825 - Southern Venezuela (southern and western Amazonas), north-western and central Brazil (east to mouth of R Negro, south to headwaters of R Juruá and middle R Purus), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (south to middle R Ucayali).
