Subspecies
Genus has been suggested, on basis of morphological analysis, as possibly belonging to an assemblage containing Laniisoma and genera currently placed in Pipridae (Schiffornis) and Tyrannidae (Laniocera, Xenopsaris, Pachyramphus). Traditional placement within present family considered preferable, pending further study. Species is closely related to, and forming a superspecies with, Dusky Purpletuft (Iodopleura fusca) and possibly conspecific, but differences comparable to those between other species pairs within family and treatment as separate species seems justified.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
isabellae Parzudaki, 1847 - Western Amazon Basin and upper R Orinoco drainage in southern Venezuela, south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, extreme northern Bolivia (Pando), and Brazil (east to western Pará).
paraensis Todd, 1950 - Eastern Amazon Basin in Brazil (eastern Para eastern from R Tocantins, south to northern Goiás).
