Subspecies
Closely related to Orange-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola jucunda), Black-chested Fruiteater (Pipreola lubomirskii) and Masked Fruiteater (Pipreola pulchra), and all sometimes treated as conspecific, but plumages distinct. Geographical range overlap, but without intergradation, between present species and Orange-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola jucunda) in south-western Colombia (Nariño). Populations in southern part of western Andes included in nominate, but possibly represent a separate, undescribed subspecies.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
decora Bangs, 1899 - Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in northern Colombia.
aureopectus (Lafresnaye, 1843) - Andes of northern and western Colombia and Venezuela (east to Lara), and Sierra de Perijá (on Colombia-Venezuela border).
festiva (Todd, 1912) - Coastal range in northern Venezuela (Carabobo east to Aragua).
