Subspecies
In the past, nominate subspecies and erythrogenys treated as forming one species, and pelzelni, albitorques and buckleyi as three further species. Form "leucura" was also described as a full species, based only on the type specimen (from R Madeira, in Brazil), but description indicates that it represents an abnormal subadult intermediate between albitorques and pelzelni, ranges of which apparently overlap in the area. A further named subspecies, selbii, of southern Brazil is considered inseparable from nominate. Although considerable variation exists among some races, exact limits and biological nature of such divergence require closer inspection. Subspecies fraserii and albitorques appear to intergrade in Costa Rica.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
fraserii (Kaup, 1852) - Eastern and south-eastern Mexico (extreme south-eastern San Luis PotosÃ, north-eastern Distrito Federal, north-eastern and eastern Puebla and southern Veracruz east to Yucatán Peninsula, south to northern Oaxaca and northern Chiapas) and northern Guatemala south to central Panama (including islands of Espartal, Brava and Sevilla, off ChiriquÃ).
albitorques Du Bus de Gisignies, 1847 - Eastern Panama, northern and western Colombia (south to western Valle del Cauca, and Magdalena Valley south to northern Huila), western Ecuador (south to Guayas and north-western Azuay), northern and central Peru (western Loreto, San MartÃn, Ayacucho), north-western Bolivia (Pando, Beni) and north-western Brazil (R Juruá and Amazon east to Manaus).
erythrogenys (Selby, 1826) - Eastern Colombia (east of Andes from Norte de Santander, Arauca and Meta east to R Orinoco), north, central and southern Venezuela (southern Maracaibo Basin east to Sucre, western slope of Andes southern from to Trujillo and eastern slope southern from northern Barinas, coastal mountains south to Guárico, also Amazonas and northern BolÃvar), Surinam, French Guiana and northern Brazil (north of lower R Amazon); probably also Guyana.
buckleyi Salvin & Godman, 1890 - South-eastern Colombia (western Caquetá and Putumayo east to Amazonas) and eastern Ecuador (Napo, Pastaza).
pelzelni Salvin & Godman, 1890 - Northern and eastern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz) and west-central and north-eastern Brazil (south of Amazon, from left bank of R Madeira east to eastern Maranhão, south to Mato Grosso).
inquisitor (Lichtenstein, 1823) - Eastern and south-eastern Brazil (southern Piauà and interior Bahia south to northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay (eastern from near R Paraguay) and north-eastern Argentina (eastern Formosa, eastern Chaco, Corrientes).
