Subspecies
Morphological and behavioural evidence suggests genus most closely related to Legatus and nesting behaviour links with Pitangus. Taxonomic history of this species somewhat turbulent. Orginally described within genus Elaenia, and subsequently transferred back and forth between current genus and Tyrannopsis, largely because of its smaller size and peculiar coloration compared with present congeners. Molecular data indicate strong support for a clade consisting of present species and Grey-capped Flycatcher (Myiozetetes granadensis) as sister-group to one formed by Rusty-margined Flycatcher (Myiozetetes cayanensis) and Social Flycatcher (Myiozetetes similis). Validity of subspecies septentrionalis uncertain.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • septentrionalis Blake, 1961   -  Eastern Surinam, French Guiana and adjacent north-eastern Brazil (Amapá).
  • luteiventris (Sclater, 1858)   -  Eastern Ecuador and south-eastern Colombia (southern from Putumayo and Vaupés) east to south-eastern Venezuela (southern Bolívar), south to Amazonian Brazil (east to eastern Pará and western Maranhío, south to Rondônia and northern Mato Grosso), eastern Peru (Loreto and Madre de Dios, probably also elsewhere) and extreme north-western Bolivia (Pando, northern La Paz).
