Subspecies
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

poliogastra Salvin & Godman, 1880 - Santa Marta Mts, in northern Colombia.
rubicundula Wetmore, 1946 - Sierra de Perijá, on Colombia-Venezuela border.
rufopectus (Lesson, R, 1844) - Eastern Andes of Colombia.
obfuscata Zimmer, JT, 1942 - Central and western Andes of Colombia south to northern Peru (Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas, possibly north-western San Martín).
centralis Hellmayr, 1927 - North-central Peru (southern La Libertad, Ancash, Huánuco).
tectricialis Chapman, 1921 - South-central Peru (Pasco south to Cuzco).
rufipectoralis (D'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, northern Puno) and western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
