Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigrita (Lafresnaye, 1843)   -  Andes of Venezuela (Mérida, Táchira). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Blackish Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca nigrita).
  • cinnamomeiventris (Lafresnaye, 1843)   -  Andes of south-western Venezuela (western Táchira) and Colombia (from Antioquia and Santander) south to Ecuador (on western slope south to Chimborazo) and extreme northern Peru.
  • angustifasciata Chapman, 1926   -  Northern Peru, from southern Amazonas south to R Marañón, also eastern Cajamarca south to south-western San Martín. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Chestnut-belted Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca thoracica).
  • thoracica Taczanowski, 1874   -  Peru, Bolivia. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chestnut-belted Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca thoracica).
