Subspecies
Relationships within genus uncertain, pending completion of major genetic study. Taxonomy of present species requires further resolution. Regional differences in voice, plumage and eye colour suggest to some authorities that subspecies may represent more than one species. Some plumage variation appears clinal, but clines are discordant. Several subspecies, particularly within South America, may not be valid.

The following 16 subspecies are recognised:

  • cinereiceps (Sclater, PL, 1859)   -  Southern Mexico (Oaxaca and Veracruz east to Yucatán Peninsula) south to Costa Rica.
  • flavoolivaceus (Lawrence, 1863)   -  Eastern Panama and north-western Colombia.
