Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and swamp forest. From sea-level - 800 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Probably forms a superspecies with Long-crested Pygmy-tyrant (Lophotriccus eulophotes), and sometimes treated as conspecific. Subspecies congener thought by some to be possibly a separate species.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • guianensis Zimmer, JT, 1940   -  The Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (north of Amazon in northern Pará and Amapá).
  • affinis Zimmer, JT, 1940   -  South-eastern Colombia (from Meta south to Putumayo, Vaupés and Amazonas), north-western Brazil (upper R Negro), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of Amazon).
  • vitiosus (Bangs & Penard, 1921)   -  Eastern Peru from eastern San Martí­n and southern Loreto south to Huánuco.
  • congener Todd, 1925   -  Western Brazil (south-western Amazonas) and eastern Peru (east of R Ucayali).
