Subspecies
Was once included in genus Mecocerculus. Vocal similarities and plumage (rufous above lores) suggest that it is possibly a member of the superspecies formed by Rufous-lored Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes flaviventris) and Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes parkeri), perhaps also including Black-fronted Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes nigrifrons), Minas Gerais Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes roquettei) and Bay-ringed Tyrannulet (Phylloscartes sylviolus). Geographical variation is minor. Validity of subspecies impossible to assess, as so few specimens available.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • superciliaris (Sclater & Salvin, 1868)   -  Forested mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama.
  • palloris (Griscom, 1935)   -  Eastern Panama (Darién).
  • griseocapillus Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1952   -  Very locally in north-western Venezuela (Sierra de Perijá), Colombia (eastern Andes, possibly also Chocó region) and eastern slopes in south-eastern Ecuador (Cordillera de Cutucú, Cordillera del Condor).
