Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 600 - 2,400 m.

Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Distinctive southern subspecies ottonis was once considered a separate species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • purus Todd, 1952   -  Coastal and interior mountains of northern Venezuela (Yaracuy, and from Carabobo east to Distrito Federal and Aragua).
  • ophthalmicus (Taczanowski, 1874)   -  Andes of Colombia (western and central ranges), north-western and eastern Ecuador and eastern slope in Peru (south to Ayacucho).
  • ottonis von Berlepsch, 1901   -  South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Madre de Dios) south to northern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz).
