Habitat
Inland wetlands, including marshes, swamps. Also, large freshwater lakes. From sea-level - 800 m.

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uruguay (B), USA (B), Venezuela.

Vagrant to Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Grenada, Jamaica (NB), South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Virgin Islands (British), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

South-eastern USA and West Indies through Mexico and central America to southern America: east of Andes, south to northern Argentina; west of Andes in western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
 
Population
Estimated population is 100,000 - 250,000 (2010).
