Habitat
Inland wetlands. From sea-level - 2,600 m.
Argentina, Aruba, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guyana, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.
Unknown to Honduras.
Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
May form superspecies with American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- pinnatus (Wagler, 1829) - South-eastern Nicaragua to Ecuador and Guianas, southern through Brazil to Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina.
- caribaeus Dickerman, 1961 - Eastern Mexico.
