Habitat
Uninterrupted expanses of lowland tropical forest. From sea-level - 900 m, but upto 2000 m.

Argentina (B), Belize (B), Bolivia (B), Brazil (B), Colombia (B), Costa Rica (B), Ecuador (B), French Guiana (B), Guatemala (B), Guyana (B), Honduras (B), Mexico (B), Nicaragua (B), Panama (B), Paraguay (B), Peru (B), Suriname (B), Venezuela (B).

Southern Mexico (from southern Veracruz, Oaxaca and apparently Campeche) through Central America to Colombia, then east through Venezuela to the Guianas and south through eastern Bolivia and Brazil to extreme north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Forest destruction is the main threat.

Only close relative appears to be Crested Eagle (Morphnus guianensis).
