Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii), Gundlach's Hawk (Accipiter gundlachi) and Chilean Hawk (Accipiter chilensis).

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • bicolor (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Southern Mexico (Yucatán) to Amazonia and the Guianas, south to eastern Bolivia, and west of Andes south to north-western Peru (Lambayeque).
  • fidens Bangs & Noble, 1918   -  Southern Mexico, north of Yucatán, in Oaxaca and Veracruz.
  • pileatus (Temminck, 1823)   -  Brazil south of Amazonia (eastern Mato Grosso to southern Maranhão and Ceará) and south to north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
  • guttifer Hellmayr, 1917   -  Brazil (western Mato Grosso) and Bolivia through Chaco of Paraguay to northern Argentina.
  • chilensis Philippi and Landbeck, 1864   -  Central Chile and west-central Argentina to Tierra del Fuego.
