Subspecies
The form labelled as Red-throated Wood-Rail (Aramides gutturalis), known only from a single specimen from Lima, Peru, is a poorly prepared specimen of this species.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
mexicanus Bangs, 1907 - Southern Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
albiventris Lawrence, 1867 - Yucatán to Belize and northern Guatemala. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
vanrossemi Dickey, 1929 - Southern Mexico (Oaxaca) to southern Guatemala and El Salvador. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
pacificus A. H. Miller and Griscom, 1921 - Caribbean slope of Honduras, and Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
plumbeicollis Zeledon, 1888 - North-eastern Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
latens Bangs and Penard, 1918 - San Miguel and Viveros (Pearl Is, Panama).
morrisoni Wetmore, 1946 - San José and Pedro González (Pearl Is, Panama).
cajaneus (Statius Muller, 1776) - Costa Rica south to north-western Colombia (including islands off of Panama) and, east of the Andes, to the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil south to northern Argentina and Uruguay.
avicenniae Stotz, 1992 - Mangroves of south-eastern Brazil (São Paulo south at least to Paraná, and possibly to Santa Catarina).
