Subtropical and tropical swamp forest. From sea-level - 2,000 m.

Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 5,000,000 - 50,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
The form labelled as Red-throated Wood-Rail (Aramides gutturalis), known only from a single specimen from Lima, Peru, is a poorly prepared specimen of this species.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

  • mexicanus Bangs, 1907   -  Southern Mexico. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
  • albiventris Lawrence, 1867   -  Yucatán to Belize and northern Guatemala. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
  • vanrossemi Dickey, 1929   -  Southern Mexico (Oaxaca) to southern Guatemala and El Salvador. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
  • pacificus A. H. Miller and Griscom, 1921   -  Caribbean slope of Honduras, and Nicaragua. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
  • plumbeicollis Zeledon, 1888   -  North-eastern Costa Rica. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Rufous-naped Wood Rail (Aramides albiventris).
  • latens Bangs and Penard, 1918   -  San Miguel and Viveros (Pearl Is, Panama).
  • morrisoni Wetmore, 1946   -  San José and Pedro González (Pearl Is, Panama).
  • cajaneus (Statius Muller, 1776)   -  Costa Rica south to north-western Colombia (including islands off of Panama) and, east of the Andes, to the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil south to northern Argentina and Uruguay.
  • avicenniae Stotz, 1992   -  Mangroves of south-eastern Brazil (São Paulo south at least to Paraná, and possibly to Santa Catarina).
