Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Sometimes considered to include White-throated Crake (Laterallus albigularis).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • oenops (Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1880)   -  South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and western Brazil.
  • melanophaius (Vieillot, 1819)   -  Coastal Venezuela east to Surinam and south through central and eastern Brazil to eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina.
