Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, swamp forest, heavily degraded former forest, plantations. From sea-level - 900 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Black-and-white Owl (Ciccaba nigrolineata), and sometimes treated as conspecific.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

huhula (Daudin, 1800) - Eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela and the Guianas to north-eastern Brazil, south to eastern Peru, north-western Argentina, northern Paraguay and eastern Brazil.
albomarginata (von Spix, 1824) - South-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
