Subspecies
Otus ingens (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into ingens and colombianus and moved to the genus Megascops following SACC (2005).
Relationships uncertain. Often considered to include Colombian Screech-Owl (Megascops colombianus) as subspecies. Cinnamon Screech-Owl (Megascops petersoni) treated as conspecific by some authors. Forms described from eastern Ecuador (aequatorialis) and Bolivia (minimus) now thought to represent individual variation, synonymized with nominate.
ingens (Salvin, 1897) - Andes from north-eastern Ecuador to west-central Bolivia.
colombianus (Traylor, 1952) - Western slope of Andes of Colombia to north-western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Colombian Screech-Owl (Megascops colombianus).
