Subspecies
Usually placed in genus Acestrura, along with White-bellied Woodstar (Chaetocercus mulsant), Little Woodstar (Chaetocercus bombus), Santa Marta Woodstar (Chaetocercus astreans) and Esmeraldas Woodstar (Chaetocercus berlepschi), but no evidence in external morphology justifies treatment in a genus separate from Rufous-shafted Woodstar (Chaetocercus jourdanii). Forms a superspecies with Santa Marta Woodstar (Chaetocercus astreans). "Calothorax decoratus" is probably a hybrid of present species and White-bellied Woodstar (Chaetocercus mulsant).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

heliodor (Bourcier, 1840) - Andes of Venezuela (M�rida), Colombia and western Ecuador.
cleavesi Moore, RT, 1934 - Andes of north-eastern Ecuador.
