Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 1,100 m.

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Purple-crowned Fairy (Heliothryx barroti), with which sometimes regarded as conspecific. There is a narrow zone of distributional overlap exists in north-western Colombia, but both taxa maintain their distinctness.

Proposed subspecies major of present species is most likely a young male of Purple-crowned Fairy (Heliothryx barroti).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • aurita (Gmelin, 1788)   -  South-eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador through northern Brazil (north of Amazon) to north-eastern Venezuela (eastern Sucre) and the Guianas.
  • phainolaemus Gould, 1855   -  North-central Brazil (south of Amazon in Para and Maranhio).
  • auriculatus (Nordmann, 1835)   -  Eastern Peru and central Bolivia to central and eastern Brazil (Amazonia south of Amazon through Mato Grosso to Alagoas and Bahia, and south to Espirito Santo, irregularly to Santa Catarina).
