Forest habitat destruction and degradation through clearance is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Emerald-bellied Puffleg (Eriocnemis aline), from which it is separated by the arid valley of R Patia.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Female very similar to many small female hummingbirds in range. Best separated by reddish belly spots.
