Subspecies
Apparently closest to Green-crowned Brilliant (Heliodoxa jacula). An intergeneric hybrid has been recorded with Longuemare's Sunangel (Heliangelus clarisse).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

leadbeateri (Bourcier, 1843) - Northern Venezuela in coastal mountains in Falcón, Yaracuy, Carabobo and Miranda.
parvula von Berlepsch, 1888 - North-western Venezuela (Táchira, M�rida, Barinas, Trujillo) and north, central and southern Colombia (Serranía de Perijá and eastern Andes south to Macarena Mts, locally in Magdalena and Cauca Valleys, and possibly also northern end of central Andes).
sagitta (Reichenbach, 1854) - Eastern Ecuador and northern Peru.
otero (Tschudi, 1844) - Central and southern Peru and north-western Bolivia.
