Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,700 - 2,650 m, occasionally down to 1,000 m.
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- rubinoides (Bourcier & Mulsant, 1846) - Central and eastern Andes of Colombia.
- aequatorialis (Gould, 1860) - Western slope of Andes in Colombia and Ecuador.
- cervinigularis (Salvin, 1892) - Eastern slope of Andes in Ecuador and Peru.
