Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Copper-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cupreicauda) and Copper-rumped Hummingbird (Amazilia tobaci) and normally considered conspecific with Copper-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cupreicauda), but morphological differences, in addition to highly disjunct ranges, support their separation as two distinct species. Subspecies iodura has generally been overlooked or rejected in recent literature. However, on the basis of morphology, in combination with distribution, it appears to be a valid subspecies; intergradation of the two subspecies may occur south of Tachira depression.
Proposed subspecies melanura is now regarded as an aberrant form of nominate subspecies.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
viridigaster (Bourcier, 1843) - Eastern slope of eastern Andes of Colombia (south to Sierra Macarena); doubtfully western slope as indicated by the type locality.
iodura (Reichenbach, 1854) - Andes of Táchira (western Venezuela).
duidae (Chapman, 1929) - Southern Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Copper-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cupreicauda).
cupreicauda Salvin & Godman, 1884 - Highlands and tepuis of eastern Venezuela, Guyana and extreme northern Brazil (Roraima). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Copper-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cupreicauda).
laireti (Phelps Jr & Aveledo, 1988) - Extreme southern Venezuela; possibly northern Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Copper-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cupreicauda).
pacaraimae (Weller, 2000) - Mts. of southern Venezuela (Sierra de Pacaraima). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Copper-tailed Hummingbird (Amazilia cupreicauda).
