Subspecies
Proposed subspecies darienensis based on birds from an extensive zone of character introgression in eastern Panama and northern Colombia, involving ventosus, nominate and venezuelensis.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

ventosus Bangs & Penard, TE, 1924 - Eastern Guatemala and Belize to Panama.
ruckeri (Bourcier, 1847) - Northern and western Colombia and western Ecuador.
venezuelensis Cory, 1913 - North-western Venezuela.
