Subspecies
Cypseloides rutilus (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) is retained in the genus Cypseloides contra AOU (1998) who place it in the genus Streptoprocne following Marin and Stiles (1992) (along with an unspecified number of other close allies) because there is some controversy as to whether this is correct (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001).

Forms superspecies with Tepui Swift (Streptoprocne phelpsi). Subspecies brunnitorques rather similar to nominate, and may be synonymous. "Chaetura nubicola" is synonym of present species.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • griseifrons (Nelson, 1900)   -  Western Mexico.
  • brunnitorques (Lafresnaye, 1844)   -  South-eastern Mexico to Bolivia.
  • rutila (Vieillot, 1817)   -  Venezuela to Guyana and Trinidad.
