Subspecies
Forms a parapatric species pair with Rose-faced Parrot (Pyrilia pulchra), which has been regarded as conspecific.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

haematotis (Sclater & Salvin, 1860) - South-eastern Mexico through northern Guatemala to western Panama.
coccinicollaris (Lawrence, 1862) - Eastern Panama and north-western Colombia.
