Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 800 - 3,300 m, occasionally down to 600 m.

Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador (B), Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua (B), Panama, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

lineola (Cassin, 1853) - Southern Mexico to western Panama.
tigrinus (Souanc�, 1856) - Northern and western Venezuela patchily south to central Peru.
