Subspecies
Closely related to Green-and-rufous Kingfisher (Chloroceryle inda).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

stictoptera (Ridgway, 1884) - Southern Mexico (Puebla, Veracruz, Yucat�n) to northern and central Costa Rica.
aenea (Pallas, 1764) - Central Costa Rica to northern Colombia, southern on west of Andes to western Ecuador, and on east of Andes east to Venezuela, the Guianas and Trinidad and south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina (Misiones) and south-central Brazil.
