Subspecies
Probably closely related to Keel-billed Motmot (Electron carinatum) and may even be conspecific. Subspecies mostly well marked, with those east of Andes, lacking tail-racquets, combined as the "pyrrholaemum group", and considered by some to be a separate species.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
minus (Hartert, E, 1898) - Eastern Honduras to northern Colombia (lower Cauca Valley).
platyrhynchum (Leadbeater, 1829) - West of Andes from north-western Colombia to south-western Ecuador (El Oro).
colombianum Meyer de Schauensee, 1950 - Lowlands north of Andes in northern Colombia.
pyrrholaemum (von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1902) - East of Andes from Colombia (southern Meta, Caquetá) south through eastern Ecuador and Peru to Bolivia (Cochabamba, Santa Cruz).
orienticola Oberholser, 1921 - Upper Amazonian Brazil (western Amazonas, Acre).
chlorophrys Miranda-Ribeiro, 1931 - Northern Brazil south of Amazon (in eastern Amazonas, Pará, Mato Grosso, northern Goiás).
