Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Sooty-capped Puffbird (Nystactes noanamae). Several other subspecies proposed, including inexpectatus (north-central Brazil), punctuliger (central Brazil) and interior (south-western Brazil), but these apparently represent inconstant, intergrading populations.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
tamatia (Gmelin, 1788) - Eastern Colombia (south to Vaupés) east to Venezuela, the Guianas, and south to northern bank of Amazon.
pulmentum Sclater, PL, 1856 - South-eastern Colombia south to eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru, western Brazil and north-eastern Bolivia.
hypneleus (Cabanis and Heine, 1863) - Amazonian Brazil east of Rio Tapajós and delta islands.
